Spanish Club Expanding our horizons through cultural experiences
Advisors: Sra. Busch (jbusch@hill-murray.org) and Sra.Corrales (mcorrales@hill-murray.org)
Mission As language teachers we realize the need for our students to interact with people from different parts of the Spanish speaking world. Our goal is to give our students a chance to explore outside the walls of the classroom and interact with the real world around us. Spanish Club activities will help students use their emerging language skills with native speakers in our community, assist students in exploring the rich Hispanic culture we have right here in MN, give our students an understanding of culture through arts and crafts and celebrations, and provide students an opportunity to give back to the community by volunteering at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church.
Who can participate Spanish Club meets September through May of the school year. Any student currently taking Spanish can participate in whatever activity interests them. There is no minimum or maximum number of activities in which a student can participate. Students should talk to their Spanish teacher for more information.
General information Come and join our fun activities. We start the school year celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month with a wide variety of fun-filled cultural activities: Guatemalan Market bracelets, locker signs, fiestas, plays and performances, bios of famous Hispanics and Spanish speaking countries that fill the halls and the whole building labeled in Spanish. Each month we have a different theme with an activity to celebrate the Hispanic culture and use our increasing language skills.
Other possible activities include; • Visiting authentic restaurants • Spanish day with the MN Twins • Volunteering at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church • Celebrating Día de los Muertos • Salsa dancing lessons • MP activities • Arts and Crafts • Spanish speaking Mass • Travel to Spanish speaking countries
Spanish Club has C.L.A.S.S. Christian Values As the sign our side Hill-Murray says: All guests welcomed as Christ. We believe that all people are welcome in our community regardless of ethnicity, race, creed or color. We seek to know more about where our “new Americans” are from and more about them so we can share their rich traditions. Life-long Learning Life long learning includes learning in and out of the classroom. Once students have the opportunity to meet native speakers, they will continue to want to meet more and continue to use their Spanish speaking skills. Our students will be working with many Hispanics in the workforce. Students who have learned language and cultural skills are in higher demand in the job market.
Academic Excellence Spanish club supports academic excellence because students can enhance their Spanish-speaking skills through practice with native speakers. This practice will give students more confidence in their abilities.
Spiritual Growth We give students an opportunity to grow spiritually by offering chances to volunteer, attend a Mass in Spanish, and gain insight into how other Christians/Catholics celebrate their faith through celebrations such as Christmas, Epiphany, Day of the Dead, and Easter. Social Development Students will have many opportunities to meet and socialize with freshman to seniors, as well as adults. By meeting people from different cultures, they will learn that what is socially acceptable in one culture may not be in another.
We invite you to explore Spanish Club.
