Cross-Country
Cross-Country is a fall sport open to any boy or girl in grades 7-12. There are no cuts; everyone who is interested in cross-country running will make the team. The team competes in the Classic Suburban Conference. In 2009, the Pioneers will compete in 10 meets, including the St. Olaf Showcase that will be held in September at the State Meet course at St. Olaf College in Northfield, MN.
During the season, which begins in August, the team practices every day after school. In 2008, the team consisted of 60 Hill-Murray students, 29 boys and 28 girls. According to coaches, the 2009 team returns several "All-conference" and "All-Conference Honorable Mention" athletes, which will help the team be very competitive in the season ahead. New runners are encouraged to add their talent to the Pioneer roster.
The teams are coached by Tim Ryan, who is in his 31st year of Cross-Country coaching (34th in coaching at Hill-Murray) and Kelley Wakem, a former Cross-Country and Track athlete at Hill-Murray in the 1980s.
According to Coach Ryan, "Nothing is better than training on a cool, crisp autumn afternoon."
The opening practice for 2009 is on Monday, August 17. Meet at the Hill-Murray fieldhouse at 8:00 a.m.
