C.A.R.E. Program
C.A.R.E. Caring and Responsive Empowerment
C.A.R.E.’s mission is: “Teens making positive choices while empowering others to do the same.”
C.A.R.E. is the peer empowerment group at Hill-Murray with a goal of promoting healthy choices. The group sponsors several activities throughout the school year. These activities include Red Ribbon Week in October, Sno-Daze in January, Wellness Week in the spring(co-sponsored with Peer Listeners), and the Safe Driving/Buckle Up Campaign in April and May. We also sponsor a variety of MP activities during the year.
As you can see from the above-mentioned activities, our group is engaged all year. We meet every other Tuesday morning at 6:55 a.m. We do not have elected officers, but seniors take turns leading the meetings. Co-Advisors are Mrs. Liz Jaeger and Mrs. Lisa Valentine.
Members are in grades 9-12. Our application process takes place in the spring for grades 8-10 and includes students completing an application and going through an interview process. Membership is limited, so the application process, as well as a review of an applicant’s academic, attendance and discipline records, are the key factors in selection. Students involved in C.A.R.E. can earn a letter with active involvement and outstanding meeting attendance. We have an overnight training in late summer and another training in May.
C.A.R.E. embraces many aspects of Hill-Murray’s C.L.A.S.S. In particular, our activities promote life-long learning (making healthy choices) and social development for the entire student body. Members have many opportunities to help promote Christian values by promoting activities that respect oneself and others.
Recent accomplishments include:
- Helping bring canine drug detection to our school.
- Supporting the use of alco-blows at all school dances.
- Winning the Golden Seat Belt Award three of the last four years as part of the Safe Communities Coalition of Washington County’s “Buckle Up Challenge.” The award goes to the school with the highest overall seat belt usage rate, among 7 area high schools.
Highlights of some of our activities include:
- The Grim Reaper visiting during Red Ribbon Week.
- Holding a Rock, Paper, Scissors Tournament and Medallion Hunt during Sno-Daze.
- Promoting wellness in the areas of nutrition, physical health, mental health, stress reduction, and healthy relationships during Wellness Week.
- Buzz-Free Prom promotion for juniors and seniors is held during our Safe Driving Campaign.
- Ice-cream sundae bars are a popular activity we try to include 2-3 times during the year.

Co-advisors for the group are: Liz Jaeger and Lisa Valentine.
